Imazon (Amazon Institute of People and the Environment) is a Brazilian research institution with the mission of promoting conservation and sustainable development in the Amazon. Our history began in 1990 in the city of Belém, Pará, where our headquarters remain to this day. Since our founding, we have been an organization dedicated to research and the search for solutions regarding the use and conservation of the Amazon's natural resources.

Over its 29 years of existence, Imazon has published approximately 700 technical works—released as articles in international scientific journals—as well as more than 100 books and booklets that support public sector decision-making and bring specialized knowledge to the community.

Amazon Monitoring

Our extensive expertise in Amazon research and monitoring places us in a position of global leadership regarding data and technologies that serve as a benchmark for various organizations worldwide. Imazon operates based on three pillars: scientific rigor, an empirical approach, and a focus on solutions. This methodology is so effective and consistent that it served as a model for other institutions to map other biomes in Brazil and around the world, and even for the creation of the Google Earth Engine platform.

Since 2008, Imazon has been publishing monthly... Deforestation Bulletin (SAD), a publication presenting independent and transparent data on deforestation and degradation in the Legal Amazon, utilizing state-of-the-art technology to guide behavioral changes that result in significant reductions in forest destruction, in the interest of sustainable development.

Sustainable Development

We advocate for sustainable development models in the Amazon region that can generate income and jobs while respecting irreplaceable natural resources. These models are presented to various local communities as well as public agencies.

Economic Activities

Imazon respects, values, and encourages the sustainable use of forest resources. Some of our projects focus directly on building capacity for sustainable agriculture and resource extraction practices, as well as promoting reforestation efforts through training for environmental agents and local communities.

As part of this initiative, we publish weekly the Forest Product Price List.

Support for Public Management

Recognizing the importance of public management for the sustainable development of the Amazon, Imazon supports the strengthening of environmental agencies in municipalities facing critical levels of deforestation. Over the past decade, Imazon has trained 700 technical staff members from municipal departments, providing hands-on instruction on the best procedures for monitoring, reporting, and issuing notices regarding polluting activities.
